Charles Manson Essay
Charles Milles Maddox was born on November 12, 1934 in the general hospital of Cincinnati, Ohio. For some time after his birth, his mother was married to a man named William Manson, causing his last name to be changed to Manson. Charles Manson is a musician and criminal, he was the leader of what became known as the Manson Family, a group that arose in the California desert sometime in the late 1960s. In 1971, he was found guilty of conspiracy to perform the murders of seven people. He believed that his murders would help trigger an approaching apocalyptic race war.
Charles was born to an unmarried 16 year old named Kathleen Maddox and originally named “no name Maddox.” The name Charles Milles Manson was given to him weeks later, his last name being changed due to the fact that his mother had married William Manson. His biological father was Colonel Walker Scott, (speculated to be African American) whom Manson never met. From 1939 to 1942, Charles lived in the home of his aunt and uncle in McMechen, West Virginia because his mother had been imprisoned for robbing a gas station in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1942, Manson’s mother was placed on parole and recovered her son. For some time she lived with him in a series of hotel rooms. In 1947, Manson’s mother tried to have her son put in a foster home, but was unsuccessful because none were available. Instead of being placed in a foster home, the court had him placed in the Gibault School for boys in Terre Haute, Indiana, only to have him escape ten months later. After escaping he ran off to his mother, and was rejected by her.
Charles’ first offenses involved the robbing of a grocery store and other small places. By robbing a grocery store, he obtained the money he needed to rent a room. Eventually he was caught in the act and sent to a juvenile center in Indianapolis. He escaped after one day, but was recaptured and placed in Boys Town, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring and supporting children and their families. Four days after he arrived in Boys Town, he escaped with another boy. The two planned to make their way to the home of the other boy’s uncle, on their way there, they committed two armed robberies. During the second armed robbery, Charles was caught and sent to the Indiana Boys School. During 1951, Charles escaped from there with two other boys. They were eventually caught in Utah driving to California in cars they had stolen; they committed various robberies along the way. Once caught, he was sent to Washington D.C.’s National Training School for Boys, where at age 21 he was pronounced “aggressively antisocial.”
In October 1951, Charles was sent to a minimum security institution on a psychiatrist’s recommendation. Good work habits and a rise in education level won him a May 1954 parole. He honored his parole and lived with his aunt and uncle in West Virginia, and then eventually moved in with his mother who lived in the same state. Manson eventually married a hospital waitress named Rosalie Jean Willis in 1955. Their happiness was short lived for he was arrested once more for taking a stolen vehicle across state lines. He received visits from his wife and his mother up until 1957. In 1957, his mother informed him that his wife had moved on and started a life with another man.
Years later after escaping and being arrested various times, Manson started a group that later became known as the Manson Family. The group consisted of eleven members, including Charles Manson himself. The Manson Family was involved in various crimes including, the Crowe shooting, the Hinman Murder, the Tate Murders, and the LaBianca Murders. This group was eventually disbanded and the members were apprehended. Manson is now currently 80 years old and serving a life time prison sentence in the Corcoran State Prison, located in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
To summarize, the lesson we can learn from Charles Manson is that we should not allow ourselves to be easily manipulated, to not become followers. Because of Charles Manson, various people were influenced to murder innocent others. The members of the Manson Family could all have had normal lives if they wouldn’t have allowed themselves to have been manipulated. Charles Manson had a rough childhood and didn’t get to see his mother various years. Because his mother rejected him, he decided to set out on a life a crime. Charles could have possibly taken another route in life and could have become someone successful instead of committing various crimes. Because of his criminal acts, he gave himself a life of suffering. In the end, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be manipulated, and we should benefit from the bad things that happen to us in life instead of being negative and dragging ourselves further down to a worse path.
